NETWORK HIGHLIGHTS AND GOVERNEMENT SUPPORT
The NETWORK was established in 1993 through a Conference and Forum sponsored by the NIH office of Minority Health, and organized by the Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons at the NIH Campus.
Several local meetings with attendance of NIH and CDC directors followed in Puerto Rico, Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago.
The activirties of this group were directed at expanding minority participation in scientific endeavours. The first specialty groups to be formed was the Mental Health Consortium funded by SAMSHA, followed by The Interamerican Genetic Network, and Healthlink, a leadership initiative.

The network published a peer review journal, BIOMEDICINA, and a medical practice magazine, Physicians & Patients. It developed a series of science translation and intervention programs such as a physician's training program on HIV, funded by the Health Resources and Services administration (HRSA) under the Special Programs of National Significance. It also established a database of scientific a medical support resources funded by CDC and the scientific exchange network fostering collaboration between institutions and between senior and junior scientist.

Biomedica was created to handle the network's publications and expand funding opportunities for its members under the SBIR and procurement program. In 2003 non-minority and senior scientists joined the netrwork. In 2003 it was awarded its first phase I by NIH and its first phase II was awarded in 2004. It has recently submitted proposals to the DoD and NSF SBIR solicitations as well as to the DoD Congressionally mandated programs.
